withdrawal of antihypertensive medication

If the patient's blood pressure is consistently within the target range and there is no evidence of end organ damage - for example, renal impairment, hypertensive retinopathy - then drug treatment may be reduced and in some instances, withdrawn completely.

However, in all cases:
- non-pharmacological measures should be continued
- long term monitoring of blood pressure is mandatory
