fungal stomatitis

Last reviewed 01/2018

Fungal stomatitis is usually caused by Candida.

An oral fungal infection is invariably seen in patients with risk factors such as:

  • immune-suppression
  • severe illness
  • broad spectrum antibiotic use

Inspection of the mouth will reveal white colonies which may coalesce. Infection may extend to the pharynx and oesophagus, resulting in dysphagia.
