Short term effects include the following:

• neurologic - encephalopathy
• irritability and abnormal tone
• hypoglycaemia, hypocalcaemia, hyponatraemia - fits
• hypoventilation or hyperventilation, with acidosis
• intraventricular haemorrhage
• pulmonary
• haemorrhage
• respiratory distress syndrome
• aspiration
• renal
• tubular necrosis, with acute renal failure
• renal vein thrombosis
• syndrome of inappropriate ADH secretion
• gastrointestinal
• perforation, ileus, necrotising enterocolitis
• hepatic - hepatitis
• reticuloendothelial - disseminated intravascular coagulation
