The following drugs have been shown to cause aplastic anaemia although the list is increasing. The rise in drug related aplasia probably accounts for the gradual increased incidence of the disease in recent times.
- antibiotics:
- chloramphenicol
- penicillin
- cephalosporins
- sulphonamides
- anti-inflammatory drugs:
- gold compounds
- indomethacin
- penicillamine
- phenylbutazone - now withdrawn in the UK
- oral hypoglycaemic drugs:
- tolbutamide
- chlorpropamide
- antineoplastic cytotoxic drugs:
- mercaptopurine
- busulphan
- doxorubicin
- methotrexate
- antithyroid drugs:
- carbimazole
- methylthiouracil
- propylthiouracil
- psychotropics:
- chlorpromazine
- prochlorperazine
- antimalarials
- diuretics:
- thiazides
- anti-epileptic drugs:
- phenytoin
- primidone
- antihistamines:
- chlorphenamine (piriton)
