Last reviewed 01/2018

The following imaging techniques are employed in the investigation of acute renal failure:

  • renal ultrasound or plain radiography:
    • permits determination of renal volume
    • may detect renal stones

  • renal function may be estimated from radionuclide studies

  • obstruction should be excluded by:
    • antegrade pyelography or ultrasound (normally)
    • retrograde pyelography (rarely)
