The potential complications of epidermoid cyst include:

• inflammation; a surrounding foreign body reaction to discharge of the cyst's contents
• infection:
• particularly the face and neck in association with acne vulgaris
• both aerobic and anaerobic organisms are commonly isolated
• calcification
• very rarely, malignant change in a long-standing cyst
