Invasive aspergillosis is:

  • a disease of the immunosuppressed (e.g. HIV, patients receiving chemotherapy) and the chronically ill. Also may occur following broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy
  • not uncommon: 4% of unselected patients dying in European tertiary referral centres have invasive aspergillosis at post-mortem
  • underdiagnosed: a third are diagnosed at death
