non-dose related

Non dose related - type B or bizarre side effects are more different to avoid. It is important to seek a history of allergy, but the side effect is often unanticipated. Types include:

  • immunological reactions: - penicillin allergy - up to 10% of population, history makes it avoidable. - there may be a cross reactivity cephalosporin allergy - note that fever may be an allergic response, which may make the allergy hard to diagnose
  • pharmacogenetic variations: - generally unavoidable, except where there is a positive family history
