limitations of cohort studies

These include:

  • expense
  • non response and drop-outs, which may result in bias
  • difficulty in maintaining constant techniques over time
  • slow accumulation of the results
  • need to test specific hypotheses
  • cannot usually test new hypotheses - but many investigators usually take, for example, excess blood in samples which is then stored
  • not suitable for rare disease
