aetiology

- embolic - atheromatous carotid arteries, especially in the elderly; or diseased heart valves, especially in the young
- thrombotic - arteriosclerosis or hypertension
- vasospastic - secondary to giant cell arteritis in the elderly, or vasomotor instability in the young
