The skin is the outer covering of the body, dividing humans from their environment. It is part of the integumentary system. The study of the skin is dermatology.

Essentially, there are two skin layers. The superficial epithelial epidermis is supported on the deeper connective tissue dermis.

As well as its protective role, skin has a range of physiological functions ranging from vitamin synthesis to thermoregulation.

Derivates of the skin include sweat and sebaceous glands, hair and nails.
