Complications caused by the varicose ulcers themselves include:

  • haemorrhage:
    • bleeding may be profuse because of the high venous pressure

  • superficial thrombophlebitis

Complications caused by associated venous hypertension include:

  • ankle oedema

  • varicose eczema

  • lipodermatosclerosis:

  • atrophie blanche

  • severe excoriation from scratching

  • venous ulceration
