aetiology of hypercalciuria

  • idiopathic:
    • absorptive hypercalciuria - hyperabsorption of calcium from the intestine
    • intrinsic impairment in renal tubular reabsorption of calcium
    • inherited defect in calcium transport associated with increased calcium-magnesium ATP-ase
  • renal tubular acidosis
  • progressive osteoporosis
  • acromegaly
  • Cushing's syndrome
  • excess of dietary calcium
  • immobilisation +/- Paget's disease
