aetiology
Last reviewed 01/2018
The aetiology of this condition is not known.
Postulated theories include:
- impact of abnormal gastrointestinal motility and pain signals from sensitised pathways in the gut viscera
- imbalance of the intestinal microbiota (insufficient lactobacilli and increased coliform bacteria) influences gut motor function and gas production, which subsequently contributes to the condition
- behavioural issues e.g - family tension, parental anxiety, or inadequate parent-infant interaction
- intolerance to cow's milk protein or lactose (1,2)
The following factors are thought to be associated with the development of infantile colic:
- maternal smoking
- increased maternal age
- firstborn status (1)
