acne neonatorum

Last reviewed 01/2018

Acne neonatorum is a condition that may develop at three to six months of age. Lesions develop on the cheeks of the baby as a result of hormones from the mother.

Usually the condition is mild and the condition resolves after some months. Sometimes scarring may occur.

If acne neonatorum is accompanied by other signs of virilization then investigation is indicated to exclude an androgen-secreting lesion.

Do not use tetracycline - this will stain milk teeth brown.
