Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular organism.
Serotypes A,B,Ba and C are widespread in many parts of the world. In dry and sandy regions however, amongst the poor and nomadic peoples the organism may give rise to trachoma.
The organism is transmitted by direct human contact, via contaminate partices (fomites), and by flies.
