This is a breakdown product of type I fibrillar collagen, which is most commonly found in bone within the human body.

It is a marker of bone turnover and it is usually measured in the urine in patients with osteoporosis. Techniques of urine collection vary, ie 24 hour urine, 2nd morning sample, 8 hour sample. It is usually expressed as a ratio with urinary creatinine concentration.
