Methods of peritoneal dialysis differ by the frequency and duration of exchanges:
- acute or temporary peritoneal dialysis - hourly exchanges
- chronic peritoneal dialysis:
- continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis - 3 to 4 exchanges per day
- continuous cyclic peritoneal dialysis - a single exchange during the day plus 4-6 exchanges during the night using automatic equipment
