T4, total, raised

Conditions associated with raised T4 include:

  • hyperthyroidism
  • increased binding proteins:
    • pregnancy
    • women taking oestrogen
    • women taking some oral contraceptive pills
  • anti-T4 immunoglobulins
  • transient hyperthyroxinaemic states:
    • acute medical / psychiatric conditions
    • high altitude exposure
  • drugs - amiodarone, amphetamines, iodinated radiocontrast dyes, propylthiouracil, glucocorticoids
  • foetus and neonate
