These are dependent on the amount and duration of alcohol intake, although other factors such as concurrent withdrawal from other drugs, for example, benzodiazepines, may contribute.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IIIR) categorise clinical features of alcohol withdrawal as:

  • uncomplicated alcohol withdrawal

  • alcohol withdrawal delirium (delirium tremens) - this is the clinical syndrome of disorientation, perceptual disturbance and psychomotor agitation.
