Low velocity abdominal trauma does not necessarily require surgical intervention.
The indications for surgery include:
- shock and haemorrhage
- faecal discharge
- prolapse of abdominal contents through the wound
- signs of peritonitis
High velocity abdominal trauma always required a laparotomy:
- the contents of the abdomen should be closely inspected
- damage should be repaired thoroughly
- skin wounds should be excised; closure should be delayed
