Low velocity abdominal trauma does not necessarily require surgical intervention.

The indications for surgery include:

  • shock and haemorrhage
  • faecal discharge
  • prolapse of abdominal contents through the wound
  • signs of peritonitis

High velocity abdominal trauma always required a laparotomy:

  • the contents of the abdomen should be closely inspected
  • damage should be repaired thoroughly
  • skin wounds should be excised; closure should be delayed
