Whole blood is rarely used nowadays. Blood component therapy has replaced the use of whole blood (1).
Blood components include:
- red cells
- red cells in additive solutions
- irradiated red cells
- washed red cells
- platelets
- irradiated platelets
- platelets in additive solutions
- human leucocyte antigen (HLA)-selected platelets
- plasma
- fresh frozen plasma
- cryoprecipitate
- granulocytes
- human albumin solutions
- clotting factor concentrates
- immunoglobulin solutions (1)
Note:
- all blood donations are filtered to remove white blood cells (pre-storage leucodepletion) to leave <1×106leucocytes in the pack
