Indications include:
- malignant disease:
- palliation
- cure
- adjuvant therapy to prevent recurrence
- maintenance treatment to maintain remission
- neoadjuvant therapy:
- reduction in tumour bulk prior to other treatment modalities
- predicts tumour sensitivity
- cancer prevention:
- populations at high risk e.g. tamoxifen for healthy women with a strong family history of breast cancer
- currently controversial and under trial
- non-malignant conditions e.g. immunosuppressive therapy for organ transplantation
