Lobular carcinoma in situ of the breast is characterised histologically by:

  • neoplastic cells:
    • derived from epithelium
    • larger than normal
    • loosely cohesive
    • oval or round nuclei
    • small nucleoli
    • lacking mitoses
  • growth of a population of identical cells within acini of lobule
  • distention of lobule by acini
  • obliteration of interstitial space
  • growth of at least half of the acini in a lobular unit
  • lobular architecture is preserved
  • calcification is uncommon
  • oestrogen and progesterone receptors are expressed more often than ductal carcinoma in situ
