Lobular carcinoma in situ of the breast is characterised histologically by:
- neoplastic cells:
- derived from epithelium
- larger than normal
- loosely cohesive
- oval or round nuclei
- small nucleoli
- lacking mitoses
- growth of a population of identical cells within acini of lobule
- distention of lobule by acini
- obliteration of interstitial space
- growth of at least half of the acini in a lobular unit
- lobular architecture is preserved
- calcification is uncommon
- oestrogen and progesterone receptors are expressed more often than ductal carcinoma in situ
