The Langerhans cell functions in antigen presentation:
- it has surface receptors for:
- complement component C3b
- IgG and IgE
- it has class II major histocompatability antigens on its surface
It takes up antigen and processes it before joining with a T lymphocyte to trigger activation. Its site makes it ideally suited for encountering new cutaneous antigen; overzealous or disordered response can give rise to contact hypersensitivity reactions.
