ophthalmological examination

The basic ophthalmological examination requires the following equipment:
- a pen torch is useful as a visual target, in assessing a squint, testing pupil responsiveness etc.
- fluorescein drops or fluorescein impregnated paper strips
- rapid and short acting mydriatic drops are required to dilate the pupil for examination of the retina; tropicamide drops are in common use
- ophthalmoscope
The examination should assess the following:
- visual acuity
- visual fields
- the eyelids
- the surface of the eye
- the pupils
- colour vision
- ocular movements
- the inner eye
