• lung cancer:
• the type and operability of lung tumours can be assessed

• pneumonia:
• good for identifying infecting organism

• interstitial lung disease:
• permits histoloy and analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage

• causes of haemoptysis, cough and recurrent pneumonia
