contraindications and cautions

These include:

  • agranulocytosis
  • severe liver damage
  • recent myocardial infarction, arrhythmias (particularly heart block)

May activate epilepsy.

Conditions where tricyclics can be used with caution include:

  • in the elderly
  • closed angle glaucoma
  • history of urinary retention
  • history of epilepsy
  • thyroid disease
  • hepatic impairment
  • pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • phaeochromocytoma
  • avoid abrupt withdrawal
