electroencephalography

The electroencephalogram is a useful tool in the investigation of epileptic seizures, especially in children and neonates. However, it should not be regarded as a pure diagnostic tool; rather it is better in the differentiation of different types of seizure, as follows:
- distinguishing absences from complex partial seizures
- distinguishing primary and secondary generalised seizures
- distinguishing absence episodes from daydreaming
- characterising electromechanical syndromes
