sotalol in atrial fibrillation

Last reviewed 01/2018

Sotalol has been shown to be effective in the control of chronic atrial fibrillation.

It is thought that sotalol has two modes of action:

  • a class II beta-blocker action
  • a class III action which prolongs the action potential

The class II effects of sotalol mean that it is a useful choice in a patient with atrial fibrillation in combination with hypertension or ischaemic heart disease.
