friction rub of the liver

Last reviewed 01/2018

A peritoneal friction rub is produced by friction between roughened peritoneal surfaces, for example from inflammation or tumour. It is heard as a creaking or grating noise during respiration.

Over the liver, a friction rub may be caused by:

  • malignancy:
    • primary - hepatocellular carcinoma
    • secondary - metastases
  • Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome
  • liver infarct
  • recent liver biopsy
