vertebrosternal ribs

Last reviewed 01/2018

The vertebrosternal ribs are those connecting thoracic vertebrae to the manubrium and sternum. They include ribs 2 to 6 or 7.

The second rib can display atypical features, but otherwise this group is typical. The anterior junction is via the costal cartilages of the respective rib which make synovial joints with:

  • cartilaginous hemifacets on the manubrium and sternum for rib 2
  • cartilaginous facets on the sternum for ribs 3 to 6 or 7

The posterior articulation is with hemifacets on the corresponding thoracic vertebra and the vertebra superior to it.
