A immunohistochemical classification of crescentic glomerulonephritis has proven to be useful. The glomerulonphritides are divided according to the pattern of IgG or C3 deposition in the glomerular basement membrane:
- type I:
- linear immunofluorescence
- anti-GBM is present
- may be associated with Goodpasture's disease
- type II:
- granular immunofluorescence
- immune complex mediated
- associated with decreased C3 or C4
- type III:
- negative immunofluorescence
- "pauci-immune" glomerulonephritis
- usually ANCA positive
