aetiology

Reduced intake:

  • prolonged parenteral nutrition with inadequate supplements
  • anorexia nervosa / kwashiorkor
  • alcholism

Increased gut loss:

  • prolonged vomiting
  • malabsorption
  • diarrhoea
  • fistulae e.g. Crohn's disease

Renal losses:

  • drug induced - cisplatin, gentamicin
  • renal disease - alcohol alters tubular mechanisms for reabsorption and increases production of metabolic intermediaries such as lactate which bind magnesium
