Aortic root dilatation causing aortic regurgitation may be due to:

  • isolated dilatation - the commonest cause

  • dissection of ascending aorta

  • secondary dilatation due to:
    • Marfan's syndrome
    • syphilis
    • ankylosing spondylitis
    • Reiter's syndrome
    • untreated hypertension
