ispaghula as a lipid-lowering drug

  • can be used as an adjunct to lipid-lowering diet in patients with mild to moderate hypercholesterolaemia
  • probable mechanism of action via reduction of bile acid reabsorption; plasma triglyceride remains unchanged
  • caution advised in patients with diabetes mellitus; also need to maintain adequate fluid intake
  • contra-indications include intestinal obstruction, faecal impaction, colonic atony
