Poisoning with lithium is mostly due to reduced excretion through:
- dehydration due to factors such as gastroenteritis, inadequate fluid intake when travelling or hot climate
- renal failure
- infection
- drug interactions (especially with thiazide diuretics)
Self-poisoning may need gastric lavage, forced diuresis or even dialysis
