suspensory ligament of axilla (anatomy)

Last reviewed 01/2018

The suspensory ligament of the axilla is the inferior extension of the clavipectoral fascia on each side of the thorax.

It originates from the inferior border of pectoralis minor, where the 'leaflets' of the clavipectoral fascia - probably thickened epimysium - have fused again having invested the muscle. It passes inferolaterally to attach firmly to the axillary fascia that forms the floor of the axilla.

Its seems to function to apply tension to the axillary fascia and more superficial skin. In doing so, it creates the concavity associated with the axillary floor.
