The enzymatic activity of trypsin has a number of roles during inflammation:

• activation of factor XII to XIIa, so further triggering either local coagulation, the kinin cascade or further plasmin production, depending on local circumstances
• it produces fibrin degradation products which may increase vessel permeability
• it activates complement component C3 to C3a
