camptodactyly
Last reviewed 01/2018
Camptodactyly is a congenital flexion deformity of the proximal interphalangeal joint in the sagittal plane, usually of the little finger. The distal interphalangeal joints and metacarpophalangeal joints are not affected, unless by compensatory changes. The word camptodactyly is derived from the Greek kampto, meaning to bend over. It is a relatively common congenital hand anomaly. Usually, it is painless but progressive. There are many potential anatomical causes. Treatment is splintage in the first instance and a significant percentage of patients will not progress. However, for progressive or severe forms, surgical exploration is required to establish and treat the underlying cause.
