Causes include:

  • haemolytic disease:
    • Rhesus disease
    • ABO incompatibility
    • G6PDH deficiency
    • spherocytosis
  • congenital infection
  • bacterial infection

Also consider:

  • minor blood group incompatibilities
  • other red cell enzyme deficiencies
  • haemolysis secondary to a haematoma
  • maternal autoimmune haemolytic anaemia - for example systemic lupus erythematosis
  • transient familial hyperbilirubinaemia
  • Crigler-Najjer Syndrome or Dubin Johnson
  • Gilbert's syndrome
