genetic loci

Last reviewed 01/2018

A recent genome-wide search for human type-1 susceptibility genes revealed five loci:

  • IDDM1:
    • chromosome 6p21
    • the gene is in the major histocompatibility complex
    • accounts for 42% of the familial clustering of the disease in the study

  • IDDM2:
    • chromosome 11p15
    • this is near the insulin gene
    • accounts for 10% of the familial clustering of the disease in the study

  • IDDM4:
    • chromosome 11q

  • IDDM5:
    • chromosome 6q

  • a fifth locus may exist on chromosome 18
