The causes of hyponatraemia may be categorised into:
- hypervolaemic with increased total body sodium and body water
- normovolaemic with normal total body sodium and slightly increased body water
- hypovolaemic with greatly reduced total body sodium and reduced body water
hypervolaemic, increased Na, greatly increased water
normovolaemic, normal Na, slightly increased water
