prognosis

Last reviewed 01/2018

  • mortality is dependent on the presence of co-morbid conditions e.g. age, co-existent renal or cardiac disease and immunosuppression
  • mortality rates range between 5 and 15%
    • note though that polyarticular septic arthritis due to staphylococcal aureus or in the presence of rheumatoid arthritis has an extremely poor prognosis with figures as high as 50% in some studies
