Classically the patient is a slim, young female with pectus excavatum.

The symptoms of mitral valve prolapse include:

  • non-specific symptoms include chest pain, palpitations, pre-syncope or syncope
  • effort intolerance, characterised by lassitude and dyspnoea

On examination there may be:

  • mid to late systolic clicks
  • late systolic murmurs heard at the apex
