• Maternity certificates, form MAT B1, allow a doctor or midwife to record a woman's name and expected date of confinement and may be used as evidence to support a claim to Statutory Maternity Pay or a state maternity benefit
• medical practitioners and midwives are able to issue form MAT B1 to pregnant women from 20 weeks before the expected week of confinement - previously, before September 2001, this was for 14 weeks before the expected date of confinement
