  • a rare tumour among children
  • equally distributed between males and females and different ethnic origins
  • prevalent in less than 0.2% of patients with hypertension
  • predominantly sporadic in occurrence (90%)
  • 10% are associated with familial disorders like
    • MEN IIa or IIb syndrome
    • Von Recklinghausen disease (neurofibromatosis)
    • Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome
    • not a feature in MEN 1 syndrome
