Periodontal disease is a major cause of tooth loss. The underlying pathology is bacterial inflammation of the supporting structures of the teeth.
Treatment involves mechanical disruption and removal of calcified plaque by the dentist, and careful oral hygiene.
- peridontitis
- antibiotic treatment (metronidazole or doxycycline) may be required if severe disease or disease unresponsive to local treatment
- periapical or peridontal abscess
- amoxicillin or metronidazole - antibacterial required only in severe disease with cellulitis or if systemic features of infection; treat for five days
