contraindications

Contraindications to surgery for congenital syndactyly include:

  • webbing that is very mild - this may be of minor aesthetic importance and usually gives no functional deficit
  • hypoplastic digits; two digits may function less well than one
  • severe complex syndactyly; a relative contraindication as shared structures such as digital nerves and arteries may make separation difficult
  • foot syndactyly; relative contraindication as usually not a functional problem and most patients are not overly concerned with the cosmetic appearance
