Usually, there is an identifiable cause in Fourniere's Gangrene:

  • perianal or rectal infection eg secondary to inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, colonic cancer or instrumentation
  • skin inflammation or infection eg pressure ulceration, hidradenitis suppurativa
  • urological or genital infection eg urinary tract infection, urethral injury such as traumatic catheterisation
  • immunosuppression eg HIV/AIDS, haematological malignancies
  • perineal trauma
